Moroccan lawyers’ group warns over planned display of disputed AFCON trophy

The Moroccan Lawyers Club has issued formal legal notices to companies involved in a planned event featuring the Africa Cup of Nations trophy, warning of potential legal action over what it describes as the display of a disputed title.

Club president Morad El Ajoouti said the notices were sent to the company operating the stadium and to event group GL events, holding them directly responsible for their role in organizing a ceremony involving a title he says has been withdrawn.

In posts on the social media platform X, El Ajoouti said the move relates to a planned presentation of the trophy ahead of a friendly match between Senegal and Peru on Saturday at Parc des Princes.

According to a program published by the Senegalese Football Federation on Instagram, the trophy is scheduled to be displayed at 3:45 p.m., ahead of the match set to kick off at 5 p.m.

El Ajoouti said a final decision issued March 17 by the Confederation of African Football’s appeals committee reassigned the title to Morocco. In the absence of a suspension ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport, he argued that displaying the trophy would constitute misrepresentation and an unlawful act.

He cited provisions of Morocco’s civil procedure code, warning that proceeding with the event could lead to legal action seeking damages under civil liability rules. He also said the group reserves the right to request judicial seizure of the trophy.

El Ajoouti added that, in the absence of a legal basis for holding the trophy, it should be placed under the custody of a court-appointed officer.

The dispute follows a decision by the Confederation of African Football to strip Senegal of the title after it was declared to have forfeited the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against Morocco, resulting in a 3-0 win for the latter.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport confirmed this week that it has received an appeal from the Senegalese Football Federation challenging the decision.

Senegal’s legal team maintains that the ruling did not explicitly address the withdrawal of the trophy and medals.
