Senegal midfielder Idrissa Gueye said he was willing to return Africa Cup of Nations winner’s medals to Morocco in a bid to ease tensions following a disputed final ruling by the Confederation of African Football.
“I personally commit to collecting the medals and perhaps returning them to Morocco if that could calm tensions between the two countries,” Gueye told Canal+ on Saturday after Everton’s 3 0 win over Chelsea.
He rejected the decision to award Morocco a 3 0 win on paper, calling it unjustified.
“A football match is decided on the pitch. That’s what we did in Morocco. We won that match and we deserve to be African champions,” he said.
CAF’s appeals committee ruled this week that Senegal had withdrawn from the final, overturning their 1 0 extra time victory in Rabat on Jan. 18.
The Senegalese federation said it would appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, while Gueye said he would have preferred no appeal.
The final was briefly suspended after protests over a late penalty decision before Senegal secured victory in extra time.
