Senegal could be banned from participating in the 2027 AFCON edition, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, after the CAF Appeals Jury ruled on Tuesday that Senegal’s national team forfeited the final of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025.
Under the Africa Cup of Nations regulations set by CAF, Article 59 states that “any association declaring a forfeit after the start of matches is liable to a fine of twenty thousand (20,000) U.S. dollars and will not be allowed to participate in the next edition of the AFCON.”
The CAF Appeals Jury overturned the Disciplinary Committee’s earlier ruling and confirmed that Senegal’s conduct violated Articles 82 and 84 of the CAF regulations, constituting a breach that led to the team forfeiting the final.
According to Article 82, “if, for any reason whatsoever, a team withdraws from the competition or does not report for a match, or refuses to play or leaves the ground before the regular end of the match without the authorization of the referee, it shall be considered a loser and shall be eliminated for good from the current competition.”
Article 84 also specifies that any team violating Article 82 is eliminated from the competition and forfeits the match 3–0, unless the opponent already had a better score when the match was stopped.
So far, Senegal’s football federation has said it will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, describing the CAF Appeals Jury’s decision as unjust and unprecedented.
The federation added that it will continue defending what it calls the rights of Senegalese football and intends to begin legal proceedings before CAS as soon as possible.
