Moroccan migrant drowns attempting to reach Ceuta

Spanish Civil Guard officers recovered the body of a Moroccan migrant on Saturday after he drowned while attempting to swim to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, local media reported.

According to El Faro de Ceuta, the young man, who was wearing a wetsuit and fins, was unable to withstand strong waves linked to Storm Teresa, which has battered the area in recent days.

The incident comes just days after a similar incident in which another Moroccan migrant died upon reaching a rocky area known as “Beniño,” near the Juan XXIII neighborhood, bringing the number of migrant deaths in recent days to at least 12.

The report noted that several migrants have attempted to reach Ceuta by swimming along dangerous routes despite rough sea conditions caused by ongoing weather disturbances.

Rescue teams have intensified maritime patrols and emergency responses amid the surge in risky crossing attempts.
