France’s ambassador to Morocco, Christophe Lecourtier, said on Friday that this year’s Eid al Fitr would be his last in the role, signalling his imminent departure from Rabat amid expectations he will take up a new post in Paris.

In a message marking Eid, Lecourtier extended greetings to Moroccans and French citizens living in the kingdom, describing Ramadan as a period of “sharing, generosity and solidarity” and urging people to enjoy time with their families.

“This Eid will also be a special moment for me as it will be the last I celebrate in these functions here in Morocco, by your side,” he said, confirming that his tenure in Rabat is nearing its end.

His departure comes as French President Emmanuel Macron has selected Lecourtier to head the French Development Agency, replacing Rémy Rioux, who has led the institution since 2016. The appointment remains subject to approval by the French parliament and a review by the country’s public transparency authority.

Lecourtier, 63, is a senior French civil servant and diplomat who previously headed Business France and served in diplomatic roles in Australia and Serbia, as well as in ministerial cabinets at the finance ministry.

His exit would mark a transition in France’s diplomatic representation in Morocco at a time of evolving bilateral ties between the two countries.
