Morocco will celebrate Eid al-Adha under normal conditions this year following significant government efforts to support the national livestock sector, government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas said Thursday.
Speaking at a weekly press briefing after a cabinet meeting, Baitas said the decision comes after last year’s exceptional royal appeal urging citizens to refrain from slaughtering sheep due to a severe shortage in the national herd.
“The government has undertaken major measures to restructure the sector and mobilized significant financial resources,” Baitas said, noting that the first phase of support programs was implemented “smoothly and effectively.”
He added that these measures, introduced despite challenging conditions marked by prolonged drought, were carried out in line with royal directives and helped strengthen the resilience of Morocco’s agricultural sector.
According to Baitas, recent rainfall has also contributed to improved pasture conditions, providing a boost to livestock recovery and supporting the return to normal Eid practices.
“The holiday will take place under normal circumstances,” he said, adding that details of a second phase of government support will be announced in the coming weeks.
Baitas also addressed the government’s decision to reactivate fuel subsidies, first introduced in 2022 in response to regional tensions that disrupted supply chains and drove up prices.
He said the subsidies are primarily aimed at transport users rather than industry professionals, with the goal of maintaining stable transportation costs and preventing price increases for consumers, particularly for essential goods.
The government has set March 20 as the start date for applications through a dedicated online platform, with eligibility criteria and deadlines outlined in an official statement.
Baitas said previous evaluations showed the mechanism was simple to use and effective, with no major irregularities recorded in transport pricing, including freight services.
“The objective is to maintain transport costs at normal levels and ensure that citizens continue to benefit from stable prices,” he said, noting that the move comes amid sharp increases in global fuel prices.
He added that authorities are closely monitoring developments and implementing parallel measures to limit the impact of rising costs on the domestic market.
