Senegal’s government on Wednesday rejected CAF’s appeal ruling that stripped the national team of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and awarded the trophy to Morocco, escalating the dispute into a broader political and legal confrontation.
In a statement reported by Senegal’s state news agency APS, the government said it viewed the decision with “deep dismay” and argued that it struck at “the very essence of sporting integrity” and undermined the credibility of continental institutions. It described the ruling as unprecedented, serious and contrary to the principles of justice, fairness and respect for results achieved on the field.
The statement said the final had been played under the applicable rules and had ended with a result settled on the pitch, adding that any attempt to cast doubt on that outcome risked damaging African fans’ trust in sporting bodies. Dakar also rejected what it called any administrative attempt to deprive Senegal of its title and called for an independent international investigation into suspected corruption within CAF.
CAF’s Appeal Board said on Tuesday that, under Article 84 of the tournament regulations, Senegal had forfeited the final and that the result would be recorded as a 3 to 0 win for Morocco. The board said Morocco’s appeal had been accepted and that Senegal, through the conduct of its team, had breached Article 82.
