Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit said more than 97 percent of Morocco’s territorial municipalities have established advisory councils on equality, equal opportunity and gender approach, according to an official assessment of consultation bodies within elected local authorities.

In a written reply to a parliamentary question, Laftit said these bodies were created following calls for candidates and predefined selection criteria, adding that all of them were consulted during the preparation of local development plans.

The minister said around 67 percent of the advisory opinions issued by these councils were taken into account, while 65 percent of the bodies have adopted internal regulations and work programs.

At the regional level, councils responsible for youth and economic affairs have also been established by all regional governments, with 74 percent of their recommendations considered during the drafting of regional development plans.

Laftit added that 307 local governments have joined Morocco’s network of open territorial authorities, which aims to strengthen citizen participation and transparency in local governance.
