Morocco’s sardine export ban puts pressure on Spain’s canning industry

Spain’s canning industry in Galicia has been under strain for more than a month after Morocco halted exports of frozen sardines to prioritize domestic demand.

Spanish outlet Faro de Vigo reported that “canning factories in Galicia are operating in a state of tense calm,” as existing sardine stocks gradually shrink while producers wait for the upcoming Iberian fishing season to begin.

Although the industry still has some reserves, they are declining steadily, the report said, leaving factories dependent on the local fishing season to restore supply after losing one of their main international sources.

Producers in Galicia expect their remaining frozen sardine stocks to last until around April and are hoping Morocco may eventually ease its export restrictions.

Industry representatives are counting on the Iberian sardine season to offset the absence of Moroccan supply, which has traditionally served as an important alternative when local catches failed to meet quality or quantity requirements.

Since Feb. 1, the Moroccan government has restricted exports of sardines — including frozen, fresh and chilled products — in an effort to secure domestic supply.

The measure is expected to remain in place for one year and comes as authorities seek to maintain availability and keep prices stable during the holy month of Ramadan.

Sardine prices in Morocco currently range between 12 and 25 Moroccan dirhams ($1.20 to $2.50) per kilogram, according to officials.
