Moroccan consumer and rights advocates urged European Union countries to adopt electronic visas after the United Kingdom began issuing eVisas only for visitors who require a UK visa.
The British Embassy in Morocco said the change took effect Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2026, meaning successful visa applicants will no longer receive paper visa stickers placed in passports, but a digital immigration status accessible through a UK Visas and Immigration account.
Ali Chtour, head of the Moroccan Association for Consumer Rights Defense, said digitisation could ease procedures for patients who travel frequently for treatment, as well as professionals facing short notice meetings and students constrained by exam and registration deadlines.
Idriss Seddraoui, president of the Moroccan League for Citizenship and Human Rights, said EU digitisation would be positive only if paired with clearer criteria, transparent refusals, appeal rights, data protection and safeguards against discrimination, arguing that visa hardship is also driven by costs, intermediaries and long waits.
