Nineteen people were killed and about 3,000 were injured, including 95 seriously, in 2,291 traffic accidents recorded in Morocco’s urban areas between Feb. 16 and Feb. 22, the General Directorate of National Security said.
In a statement, police attributed the main causes of the crashes, in order, to driver inattention, failure to yield right of way, excessive speed, pedestrian inattention and failure to keep a safe following distance.
The list of contributing factors also included failure to stop at a stop sign, loss of control, illegal turning or lane changes, driving on the left side of the road, improper overtaking, failure to stop at a red light, driving the wrong way and changing direction without using turn signals.
The figures are part of the weekly road safety tally published by Moroccan police for incidents inside city limits.
