Residents in more than 20 villages in areas the government has declared disaster zones in Larache Province have been without drinking water for weeks, forcing families to collect water from streams, channels and irrigation runoffs that cut through farmland, Hespress reported citing local sources.
A resident of Saouken, about 15 kilometres from Ksar el Kebir, described hauling plastic barrels on a horse cart after taps ran dry and asked how families were expected to cope with “no water and no gas”.
Another resident appealed for a solution before Ramadan as households fear shortages will worsen during fasting. A local association head said the water shutdown is compounding losses from recent damage to crops and livestock and accused local elected officials of near total absence.
He said rural communities feel excluded from how damage is assessed and aid is distributed, warning more families will be pushed to leave for Tangier to find work and basic services.
