Authorities in Morocco’s Taounate province have carried out more than 940 emergency interventions since early February to mitigate the impact of severe weather, according to updated official data released Tuesday.
The provincial vigilance committee said the operations, conducted through Feb. 10, provided assistance to more than 1,360 people from 336 families whose homes were partially or fully damaged, at risk of collapse, or flooded due to rising river levels.
Road clearance accounted for the bulk of the interventions. Authorities reported 485 operations to reopen roads, including 35 sections of National Road No. 8, 86 sections of regional roads, 70 provincial road segments, and about 200 interventions on unclassified roads and rural tracks. Crews removed mud, rocks, debris and snow, restoring access to essential services and supplies.
Emergency services also carried out about 115 operations to repair damage to drinking water, electricity and sanitation networks. These included 40 urgent water-related interventions, 35 involving electricity networks, and more than 40 sanitation operations across the municipalities of Taounate, Ghafsai and Ait Boubidmane.
In addition to assisting affected families, authorities reported rescuing and safeguarding 263 head of livestock threatened by flooding.
Officials stressed that the figures remain provisional, noting that local authorities and emergency services remain on high alert as unstable weather conditions persist.
The data were presented during a meeting of the provincial vigilance committee held Monday under the chairmanship of the governor of Taounate province. The meeting focused on assessing the situation and coordinating urgent response measures.
The governor urged all stakeholders to maintain heightened vigilance and a strong field presence to protect lives and property, in line with royal instructions and Interior Ministry directives related to the national plan to mitigate the effects of extreme cold and climate disruptions.
