Morocco’s Interior Ministry said Wednesday that authorities have carried out large scale preventive evacuations as flooding worsens in parts of the country, citing sharply rising levels in rivers and waterways.
In a statement by its official spokesperson, the ministry said public authorities coordinated across sectors over recent days to mobilize personnel and equipment ahead of what it called an exceptional situation, acting under royal instructions from King Mohammed VI and with support from Royal Armed Forces units to supervise evacuations and transport residents.
The ministry said it adopted a gradual evacuation approach based on assessed risk levels and expected damage, while providing transport for affected residents. It said that as of Wednesday morning, a total of 108,423 people had been evacuated or transported.
By province, it reported 81,709 evacuees in Larache province, mainly in Ksar El Kebir, adding that those evacuated and those who left on their own represent 85 percent of the city’s population. It reported 9,728 evacuees in Sidi Kacem province, 2,853 in Sidi Slimane province, and 14,133 in Kenitra province.
Authorities also set up shelter camps and reception spaces and provided essential support to displaced residents, the ministry said. It said services will keep monitoring conditions and adjusting deployments.
Looking ahead, it cited official warning bulletins that point to further severe weather, including rainfall that could reach 150 millimeters in a short period in some areas. It warned of exceptional inflows, especially at Oued Al Makhazin Dam, where hydrological data indicate record storage levels that could increase pressure on infrastructure.
The ministry urged residents in Larache province, particularly Ksar El Kebir, Souaken, Oulad Ouchih, the Larache industrial zone, and areas near the mouth of the Loukkos River, to strictly follow evacuation orders and leave immediately to protect lives. It also called for continued cooperation with local authorities.
