Morocco’s International Mohammed VI University Hospital marked a milestone on Thursday after receiving the High Environmental Quality (HQE) certification at the “Exceptional” level, the first time such a distinction has been awarded in Morocco and across Africa.
The certification was granted by Certivea, a French body specializing in environmental performance standards for buildings and urban projects.
The award recognizes the hospital complex’s compliance with advanced sustainability, energy efficiency, and environmental integration criteria.
The distinction was formally presented during an official ceremony attended by senior officials of the hospital and the Mohammed VI Foundation for Sciences and Health. Two certificates were awarded, covering both the hospital and the Mohammed VI University of Sciences and Health.
According to Certivea, the Rabat complex was designed from the outset as a sustainable healthcare and academic facility, integrating renewable energy, responsible water management, and reduced carbon emissions.
The project includes photovoltaic installations covering more than 10 percent of its energy needs and cutting emissions by about 40 percent.
