Heavy rains disrupt roads and trigger flood warnings in Northern Morocco

Northern Morocco has been hit by heavy rainfall, causing severe disruptions to transportation and prompting flood alerts in several cities.

The national road linking Tetouan and Chefchaouen was completely blocked after the Seflaou wadi experienced an unusually high water level, preventing vehicles from passing and creating significant traffic disruptions toward Ouezzane, Fez, and Al Hoceima.

Authorities reported that the blockage at this section of the road lasted over an hour and a half, prompting urgent warnings to motorists to avoid crossing the watercourse until safety measures are implemented.

In Al Qasr Al Kabeer, local authorities declared a state of high alert as intense rainfall raised concerns about potential flooding, especially in low-lying and vulnerable neighborhoods, including the old city.

The municipality issued a notice warning residents that floodwaters could reach up to one meter in some areas and urged citizens to exercise extreme caution, avoid traveling through flood-prone zones, stay away from water channels, and secure essential belongings.

Authorities have mobilized personnel and resources to respond to possible emergencies. A field inspection led by Azzam Bouassam, the governor of Larache province, focused on high-risk areas in the old city, assessing readiness and instructing the installation of sand barriers in strategic locations to reduce water flow and mitigate potential damage.

Specialized committees conducted detailed site visits and maintained direct communication with residents, particularly in vulnerable alleys near the local mosque, addressing their concerns and ensuring preventive measures were in place.

The National Meteorological Directorate issued an “orange alert” warning of heavy rainfall expected across Tetouan, Chefchaouen, Larache, Taounate, and Al Hoceima (60–100 mm), and moderate rainfall in Fahs-Anjra, M’diq-Fnideq, Tangier-Asilah, and Ouezzane (30–60 mm), starting Wednesday at 11 a.m. until Thursday at 6 p.m.

Authorities stressed the importance of vigilance and cooperation from the public to safeguard lives and property during this period of exceptional weather.
