Heavy snowfall and mountain rockfalls shut Morocco’s National Road 9 on Tuesday, cutting traffic in both directions through the Tichka mountain pass and severing the main road link between Marrakech and Ouarzazate, according to official information obtained by Hespress.
The closure affected the high altitude Tichka corridor, where snow accumulation and falling debris made driving unsafe. Local authorities blocked access points to prevent vehicles from entering the pass, citing risks of skidding and travelers becoming trapped in remote mountain sections.
Snowplows and technical teams from the equipment and water ministry were deployed to clear the road, removing snow and rock debris as operations continued through the morning.
Officials urged travelers and transport operators heading toward southeastern Morocco to delay their journeys or check road conditions through official hotlines.
Authorities said the road was expected to reopen before midday Tuesday, weather conditions permitting.
The disruption marks the latest in a series of winter closures on the route, which regularly becomes impassable during heavy snowfalls. The Tichka pass was last fully blocked earlier this month on January 3, when snowfall again halted traffic between Marrakech and Ouarzazate.
