Sweden said Monday it supports Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara, calling it a “credible basis” for negotiations aimed at reaching a final settlement.
The statement came in an official release from the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs following a phone call between Sweden’s Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
Sweden’s support aligns it with the majority of European Union member states and more than two-thirds of United Nations member countries that back Morocco’s autonomy proposal.
The backing refers to UN Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted on Oct. 31, 2025, which affirmed that a genuine autonomy arrangement under Moroccan sovereignty represents the most feasible solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara.
