Morocco explores Korean-made tanks and air defenses to diversify arms buys

Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces are studying the potential purchase of up to 400 South Korean–made K2 Black Panther main battle tanks, along with the Cheongung medium-range air defense system, according to Defense Blog, citing South Korean sources.

The report said the move reflects Morocco’s efforts to diversify its military procurement away from U.S. and European systems. If completed, it would mark the first time Korean-made heavy ground combat and air defense equipment is integrated into Morocco’s armed forces.

Citing industry sources in Seoul, Defense Blog said the potential deal underscores Rabat’s push to modernize its ground and air defense capabilities after years of operating a mixed fleet of armored vehicles that are costly and complex to maintain. Morocco’s interest reportedly spans both heavy ground combat platforms and air defense systems, pointing to a broader review of its defense structure rather than a single-platform acquisition.

The K2 Black Panther is among South Korea’s most advanced main battle tanks. Designed, developed and manufactured by Hyundai Rotem, it was first unveiled at the ADEX defense exhibition in Seoul in October 2009. In 2014, Hyundai Rotem signed a contract with the South Korean Army to supply the tank as a replacement for its aging M48 Patton fleet.

According to South Korean sources, the K2 was developed using domestic technology, with the first prototype revealed in 2007. Its combat capabilities are considered superior to many tanks in service worldwide, including those operated by the North Korean and Chinese armies.

The tank features composite armor and explosive reactive armor, as well as active protection systems and defenses against biological and chemical threats. It is designed to withstand direct frontal hits from 120 mm tank rounds.

Crewed by three soldiers, the K2’s main armament is a 120 mm Rheinmetall gun capable of firing up to 15 rounds per minute. The gun is compatible with NATO-standard tank ammunition and can also launch KSTAM smart munitions.

The Cheongung system, meanwhile, is a medium-range surface-to-air missile system that entered service with the South Korean military in 2016. It was developed by LIG Nex1 with technical support from Russia’s Almaz-Antey and Fakel design bureaus, in cooperation with South Korea’s Agency for Defense Development. Its radar was developed by Hanwha Systems.

The Cheongung system includes a multifunction radar, at least four launch vehicles, missile transport and reload vehicles, and support units. Each launcher carries eight vertically launched missiles. The missiles have a speed of about Mach 5 and can intercept aircraft at ranges of up to 40 kilometers and ballistic missiles at distances of up to 20 kilometers.
