A court in El Jadida ordered a husband to return to the marital home, a ruling that has sparked debate in Morocco over judges’ role in family disputes, a statement by the NGO Matqish Weldi said.
The El Jadida court said the husband had left the home without lawful justification and ruled that marriage entails reciprocal duties, including cohabitation and joint responsibility for household and children, the reports said.
Reports said it included a fine.
Matqish Weldi said family stability affects children’s psychological and social wellbeing and urged that court intervention remain balanced and centered on child welfare.
The group called for mediation and psychosocial support before any coercive order, and said the decision reflects case specific facts and should not be treated as a general rule.
A similar family court ruling was issued in Marrakech in February 2020.
