A court in Casablanca has sentenced a man to nine months in prison for assaulting a doctor at a private clinic, in a case that sparked condemnation from medical professionals, judicial Hespress AR sources said Tuesday.
The Ain Sebaa Primary Court handed down the ruling late Tuesday, also ordering the defendant to pay 30,000 dirhams (about $3,000) in compensation to the doctor, who filed the complaint.
The assault took place in November at a private clinic in Casablanca. The defendant was prosecuted while in custody on charges including assault and battery, defamation and forming a criminal gang, according to court documents.
A Hespress AR source familiar with the case said the doctor’s legal team has filed an appeal, arguing that the compensation does not adequately reflect the physical and psychological harm she suffered.
The case drew widespread criticism from professional medical organizations. In December, the National Coordination of Private General Practitioners and the National Coalition of Private-Sector Doctors condemned the attack, describing it as criminal behavior that threatens the safety of health workers and undermines the quality of medical services.
Health professionals in both the public and private sectors in Morocco have repeatedly called for stronger protection measures, citing recurring incidents of violence against medical staff.
