Bank Al-Maghrib announced that several older series of Moroccan banknotes will be withdrawn from circulation starting Jan. 1, 2026, under a government decree issued in December 2025.
In a public notice, the central bank said the decision is based on Decree No. 2.25.966 dated Dec. 23, 2025, which provides for the gradual removal of specific banknotes from legal tender.
The banknotes concerned include 10-, 50-, 100- and 200-dirham bills issued in 1987, 10-dirham bills issued in 1990, and 20-dirham bills issued in 1996. These banknotes will lose their status as legal tender and their debt-settlement power as of Jan. 1, 2026.
Bank Al-Maghrib said holders of the affected banknotes may exchange them without restriction at Bank Al-Maghrib branches as well as at counters of commercial banks. The exchange period will run from Jan. 1, 2026, through Dec. 31, 2030.
The central bank did not specify the volume of banknotes concerned but urged the public to complete exchanges within the designated timeframe to avoid holding invalid currency.
