Disorderly scenes broke out after Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals on Saturday night at Marrakesh’s Grand Stadium, overshadowing the Super Eagles’ qualification for the semifinals.
According to observers at the venue, sections of Algerian supporters attempted to storm the pitch immediately after the final whistle, while acts of vandalism were reported in parts of the stands. Flares were also thrown toward security personnel, prompting swift intervention by stadium authorities.
Tensions escalated beyond the stands, with confrontations reported between some Algerian fans and security forces tasked with maintaining order, as officials worked to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.
The unrest extended onto the field, where brief altercations broke out between Algerian and Nigerian players in the moments following the match, scenes widely criticized as unbecoming of the tournament and contrary to the principles of fair play.
Africa’s governing body, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), is expected to open a disciplinary investigation into the incidents, particularly the use of flares, which are strictly prohibited at Africa Cup of Nations matches. The Algerian Football Federation could face sanctions in the coming days.
Nigeria advanced to the semifinals after goals in the second half secured a 2-0 win.
