Several mountainous provinces in Morocco are expected to experience a continued cold wave from Friday through Sunday, Jan. 11, according to the latest weather alerts issued by the General Directorate of Meteorology under the Ministry of Equipment and Water.
An updated warning bulletin issued Thursday morning maintains an “orange” level of alert, forecasting very low minimum temperatures ranging between minus 8 and minus 3 degrees Celsius in parts of the Middle Atlas, High Atlas and Anti-Atlas mountain ranges.
The cold wave is expected to affect the provinces of Ifrane, Midelt and Boulemane, as well as Azilal, Beni Mellal and Khénifra. A noticeable drop in temperatures is also forecast for Al Haouz, Chichaoua, Taroudant, Tinghir, Ouarzazate, Taza, Sefrou and Guercif.
The updated warning follows several days of unusually cold conditions in inland areas of the country, where cold air masses have led to a sharp decline in overnight temperatures since Tuesday.
Earlier alerts issued between Tuesday and Thursday warned of snowfall, a strong cold wave and gusty winds affecting several regions across the kingdom.
Meteorological authorities attribute the current cold spell to the influence of very cold polar air masses originating in high northern latitudes, particularly polar and subpolar regions, where solar radiation is weak and low temperatures persist for extended periods.
The Directorate of Meteorology said these air masses typically affect Morocco when they extend toward North Africa due to a weakening or westward shift of the Azores High pressure system, combined with the deepening of low-pressure systems over the western or central Mediterranean. This configuration allows a northerly airflow to channel cold polar air toward the country.
