Several bodies of sub Saharan African migrants who died from extreme cold in eastern Morocco in December remain unidentified, delaying burial procedures weeks after the deaths, a Moroccan official said.

About 12 migrants died from exposure to cold in areas near Touissit in Jerada province, close to the Moroccan Algerian border, during December, according to figures provided by an official source from the Jerada local authority to Hespress.

Five of the bodies remain unidentified, the source said, adding that the lack of identification has slowed burial procedures. The most recent body was found on Dec. 21, the source said.

The last burial of one of the deceased migrants took place about a week ago in the presence of the individual’s family, according to the same source.

Earlier, the Oujda branch of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights said six migrant bodies were buried on Dec. 12 in the Jerada cemetery, out of nine deaths recorded at that time.

The official source said Moroccan authorities have provided medical care, food and shelter to migrants in the area, without naming the institutions involved. No additional details were given on identification procedures or whether further burials are expected.
