Morocco’s National Judicial Police Brigade has launched an investigation into dozens of social media influencers suspected of promoting unlicensed foreign gambling and sports betting platforms, following instructions from prosecutors in Casablanca.
According to sources familiar with the case, at least 36 influencers have already been questioned, with the number expected to rise in the coming weeks. The probe was triggered by a complaint filed by Morocco’s state-backed gambling operator, which accused influencers of advertising foreign betting websites that target Moroccan users in violation of national law.
Authorities say the promotions have caused significant financial losses by channeling betting revenues abroad, undermining Morocco’s regulated gambling sector. Investigators are examining the influencers’ commercial agreements and online content linked to sports betting platforms.
The case also revives controversy surrounding foreign betting firm 1xBet.
Budget Minister Fouzi Lekjaa has previously criticized the company, warning that its activities drain foreign currency and operate outside Morocco’s legal framework.
No formal charges have yet been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.
