A Moroccan military drone struck a vehicle used by gold prospectors from the Tindouf camps in the Sahara buffer zone on Wednesday, setting the car ablaze without causing casualties, a source familiar with Mauritania’s informal mining sector told Hespress.
The incident occurred in the Karzaz area, roughly 200 kilometres from the Mauritanian city of Zouerate, amid heightened security along the desert frontier. The source said Moroccan forces maintain full aerial surveillance over the buffer zone, using drones for continuous monitoring and precision strikes against suspicious movements.
Separately, the source reported that Algerian army units raided several informal mining sites earlier this week, seizing vehicles, firing live ammunition and detaining dozens of prospectors of unknown nationality, including Mauritanians. Their fate remains unclear.
Informal mining syndicates operating across porous borders are increasingly linked to smuggling and organised crime, the source said, warning that the issue now requires firm enforcement rather than awareness campaigns.
