Security authorities in Casablanca have stepped up police deployments across major streets and public squares ahead of New Year celebrations, officials said.

The reinforced security measures also coincide with the Africa Cup of Nations, which is being hosted in several Moroccan cities, including Casablanca, where matches are being played at the Mohammed V Sports Complex.

Casablanca police have increased their presence in strategic areas as part of a preventive plan aimed at ensuring public safety and securing New Year festivities as well as sporting events that draw large crowds, according to local authorities.

Police units have been deployed around the Mohammed V Complex in the Maârif district, near major hotels, tourist sites and large commercial areas.

Authorities instructed security services to intensify monitoring across the city, including motorcycle patrols, to deter theft and other criminal activity. Additional patrols were ordered in neighborhoods identified as security hotspots.

Police were also directed to crack down on disorderly behavior and the sale of illegal drugs and alcohol.

Officials said the heightened security presence is expected to remain in place beyond New Year celebrations as Africa Cup of Nations events continue.
