Morocco ranks second to last in Africa for mobile money account ownership, with only 12 percent of adults using such services, according to a December 2025 report by research network Afrobarometer.
Based on survey data collected in 35 African countries in 2024 and 2025, the report places Morocco alongside Tunisia at the bottom of the continental ranking, far below the African average of more than 60 percent.
By comparison, mobile money usage reaches 92 percent in Kenya, 89 percent in Gabon and 88 percent in Ghana.
While Morocco performs closer to the continental average in traditional banking, with 38 percent of adults holding bank accounts, the report notes that limited access to digital financial services constrains broader financial inclusion.
Afrobarometer attributes the gap to regulatory frameworks, business models in mobile payments and cultural factors in North Africa. Researchers warn that weak digital financial inclusion could limit domestic savings mobilization and slow capital market development.
