Around 41% of Moroccans support the government’s right to ban organizations that go against its policies, higher than the continental average of 32%, according to a recent Afrobarometer survey covering 38 African countries in 2024 and 2025.

In Mauritius, Lesotho, and Madagascar, only 7%, 12%, and 14%, respectively, support the government’s right to ban organizations that go against its policies, compared with 67% in Sierra Leone and 68% in Tanzania.

The poll, titled “Demand for civic space holds strong across Africa as supply of freedoms wanes,” found that just 45% of Moroccans believe people should be free to join any organization.

It also showed that only 3% of Moroccans do not feel free to say what they think, compared with 54% in Comoros and 48% in Congo-Brazzaville.

Around 34% of Moroccans say they are completely free to express their views, slightly below the 38-country average of 39%.

Higher levels are seen in Liberia 64% and the Gambia 66%, where more people say they feel completely free to express their opinions.

59% of Moroccans say they are completely free to choose who to vote for without feeling pressured, compared with 33% in Comoros and just 29% in Congo-Brazzaville.

But higher levels are recorded in Sierra Leone (94%) and Senegal (91%), well above the continental average of 67%.

The survey also found that nearly half of Moroccans (47%) believe the last elections were free and fair, with minor problems, compared with 24% in Comoros and 10% in Gabon.

Senegal and Tanzania are leading, with 88% and 84%, respectively, saying the elections were free and fair, above the continental average of 55%.

Around 22% of Moroccans say it is somewhat likely that powerful people could find out how they voted despite the secret ballot, while 71% say it is unlikely.
