Mali and Zambia played to a 1–1 draw on Monday at the Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca in the opening round of Group A at the Africa Cup of Nations, leaving host nation Morocco alone at the top of the group.

Mali took the lead in the 61st minute through Lassine Sinayoko, who finished from close range after sustained pressure. Zambia equalized deep into stoppage time when Patson Daka struck in the 90th minute plus two, salvaging a point for his side.

The match was marked by a missed penalty for Mali shortly before halftime, a setback that proved costly as Zambia remained within reach and capitalized late.

Following the result, Mali and Zambia are level on one point each in second and third place respectively. Morocco lead Group A with three points after their opening win over Comoros, who remain bottom without a point.

In the second round on Friday, Morocco face Mali in Rabat, while Zambia play Comoros in Casablanca.
