Interpol reports record levels of live animal trafficking in 2025
Thursday 11 December 2025 - 17:52

Interpol said global trafficking of live animals hit record levels in 2025 after a coordinated operation led to the seizure of nearly 30,000 animals and the identification of 1,100 suspects.

The crackdown, carried out across September and October with security agencies from 134 countries, uncovered 6,160 birds, 2,040 turtles, 1,150 reptiles, 208 monkeys, 46 pangolins, 10 big predators and more than 19,000 other wild animals.

The organization noted a sharp rise in wildlife trafficking, driven largely by growing demand for exotic pets. Interpol Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza warned that criminal networks involved in wildlife smuggling are increasingly tied to broader crime, including drug trafficking and human exploitation.

The operation highlights the expanding global nature of wildlife crime and the pressure it places on endangered species, as countries work to curb illegal markets fueled by high profits and transnational criminal groups.
