Morocco’s expanding electric-vehicle (EV) industry is drawing major international companies, with French automaker Renault planning to open a new EV factory at the Nador West Med Port, according to a new report by the Attaqa platform.

The plant is expected to open in 2026 with the port, a project backed by around $4.2 billion in public investment.

It is designed to boost economic activity in Morocco’s eastern region by attracting industrial and logistics operations around the port.

The report noted that Renault is entering a new phase in Morocco between 2025 and 2030, centered on gradually increasing EV production.

The company aims to secure €2.5 billion in local-sourcing revenue by 2025, rising to €3 billion with an 80% integration rate.

Renault has operated in Morocco since 2012 through its Tangier production hub and, in October 2025, signed a new investment agreement with the government to support EV manufacturing.

The roadmap also includes an engineering and R&D center to be established before the end of 2025, aimed at strengthening Morocco’s technological capabilities in vehicle design and innovation.

Renault produced more than 413,000 cars in the country last year, exporting 90% of output to over 68 markets.

Global attention on Morocco’s EV sector is spreading beyond Renault, the same source added.

According to BMI, Morocco’s electric passenger vehicle market is projected to grow by more than 36% a year through 2034, with the national EV fleet expected to reach nearly 237,000 vehicles by then.

In June 2025, Tesla opened a Moroccan branch, with plans for an initial investment in a Kenitra assembly plant expected to produce about 400,000 units annually.

Chinese automaker BYD continues to expand its footprint, becoming Morocco’s top-selling plug-in hybrid brand in 2024, while Zeekr entered the market in 2025.

By 2035, Morocco could have up to 2.5 million electric vehicles on its roads, providing a storage capacity equivalent to 91% of the country’s total electricity demand, according to a recent report by the IMAL Initiative for Climate and Development.
