Two residential buildings collapsed overnight in Fes, trapping residents under debris and triggering an emergency response, local media in Fes reported.
The buildings collapsed late Tuesday in the Al Mostaqbal Al Massira neighborhood in the Zouagha district, a densely populated area with aging housing infrastructure, videos circulating online showed.
Witnesses said local residents and volunteers were the first to respond and helped pull a child from the rubble before specialized rescue teams arrived on site.
Authorities said no official casualty toll had been confirmed.
Search teams continued to work through unstable debris to determine whether other residents remained trapped.
Emergency crews brought in heavy machinery and lighting equipment overnight to support recovery efforts, reports said.
Officials announced the opening of a judicial investigation to establish the cause of the collapse.
Authorities said potential construction violations, structural neglect and administrative responsibility would be examined.
The collapse has renewed concerns about building safety in older and working class neighborhoods in Fez, where residents have repeatedly warned about weakened structures and delayed renovation programs, local media said.
The incident follows a deadly building collapse in another Fez neighborhood earlier in 2025 that intensified public pressure for stricter housing controls and faster intervention in high risk buildings.
Local authorities urged residents to stay away from unstable buildings and to report visible structural risks. Officials said emergency housing and assistance would be provided for families displaced by the collapse.
