Rains ease farmers fears but experts flag structural water scarcity

Rains and snow across parts of Morocco in late November have boosted hopes for a better farming season after years of drought, with experts saying the latest fronts will improve vegetation cover and encourage farmers to resume planting.

Environment and climate specialist Mohammed Benabou said the precipitation will raise soil moisture, support ploughing and cereal sowing and ease pressure on feed costs by accelerating pasture growth, which could support both crop yields and livestock.

Agricultural engineer and water specialist Abderrahim Hindouf said the rains will speed up ploughing and sowing that started late this season and will benefit orchards, but noted that their impact on groundwater and surface storage remains limited so far.

He warned that Morocco still faces structural water scarcity linked to its geography, climate change and rising demand from population growth and farming and industrial activity, stressing that only sustained rainfall over time can ease pressure on dams and aquifers.
