A court in southern France has sentenced a 25-year-old Moroccan man to one year in prison, including eight months to be served, for directing anti-Semitic insults at a Jewish family and a rabbi, the regional prosecutor said Sunday.
The defendant appeared in court in Béziers on Nov. 25 while not in custody. He had previously been detained but admitted only to part of the comments attributed to him, according to a statement from Béziers prosecutor Arnaud Faugère.
The incident dates back to July, when a 66-year-old man filed a complaint saying he was verbally assaulted while heading to the local synagogue with his wife, daughter, grandchildren, a friend and the community’s rabbi.
“A vehicle approached them, and one of the passengers shouted anti-Semitic insults,” the prosecutor said. The victims were able to note the car’s license plate before it drove off.
The driver was sentenced to one year in prison, including four months suspended. He is also prohibited from contacting the victims or approaching Jewish places of worship for two years, and must pay financial damages to the victims, the prosecutor added.
