Several airlines delayed or cancelled flights on Saturday after Airbus told operators to urgently replace flight control software on about 6,000 A320-family aircraft over a radiation-linked fault.
Airbus issued “immediate precautionary actions” after a technical incident on a JetBlue flight in the United States, warning that intense solar radiation could corrupt data used by flight control computers. The European manufacturer said a significant share of in-service A320 aircraft could be affected.
Air France cancelled 35 flights on Friday and said further cancellations were expected, while Colombian carrier Avianca reported that about 70 percent of its fleet was impacted by the software issue. Other carriers, including American Airlines, Delta, United and Air India, reported delays and ongoing updates to affected aircraft.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency said Airbus had notified it of the problem and warned that software replacement could cause temporary schedule disruption, while stressing that safety remains the priority.
