A 65-year-old Thai woman presumed dead was found alive moments before cremation, after temple staff heard knocking from inside her coffin.
The woman arrived Sunday at a temple outside Bangkok, brought in by her brother in a white coffin.
The brother believed she had died two days earlier after years bedridden and becoming unresponsive. He was attempting to honor her wish to donate her organs, but a hospital refused without a death certificate.
Temple general and financial affairs manager Pairat Soodthoop told the AP that staff were preparing for cremation when they heard faint knocks.
“I saw her opening her eyes slightly and knocking on the side of the coffin,” he said, adding that “she must have been knocking for quite some time.
The temple manager said he was explaining to the brother how to get a death certificate for the cremation, just minutes before the incident.
The woman was transferred to a nearby hospital, with the temple volunteering to cover her medical expenses.
