Morocco’s Popular Movement party called Monday for the creation of a parliamentary committee focused on the country’s Sahara issue, citing provisions in the chamber’s internal rules.
Speaking during the House of Representatives’ oral questions session, Popular Movement leader Idriss Sentissi referenced Article 83, which allows for the establishment of “thematic working groups” on major national issues.
He said the party will submit a new request under Articles 72 and 79 to formally establish the committee.
Meanwhile, the Socialist Party, part of the opposition, urged greater transparency in committee proceedings. Member Lahcen Lachgar cited Article 128, which sets committees’ work as confidential, but allows sessions to be made public at the initiative of the chamber’s president or at the request of party leaders or the government.
Lachgar noted that current transparency measures include live broadcasts via the parliament’s official YouTube channel.
“Citizens should have the ability to follow debates on major national issues, and the chamber should use all available means to ensure openness,” he said.
The push comes amid ongoing parliamentary discussions marking Morocco’s recent national celebrations of Unity and Independence, underscoring the Sahara issue’s continued prominence in domestic politics.
