Morocco ranks 86th in global R&D, shows moderate knowledge performance

The recent Global Knowledge Index 2025 report showed that Morocco ranked 86th worldwide in research, development (R&D), and innovation, scoring 16 out of 100, slightly below the global average of 18.82.

Lebanon, on the other hand, ranked 62nd and Iran 53rd, while Switzerland led with 60 points, followed by Denmark with 51.9.

The report described Morocco as a moderate performer in overall knowledge infrastructure, scoring 36 and placing 89th out of 195 countries.

This positions the kingdom 11th out of 22 at the regional level, and 10th out of 50 within its income group.

The Index is based on six sub-indices and 18 pillars, covering environmental, social, and governance criteria, pre-university education, the economy, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and higher education, information and communication technology, and R&D and innovation.

In pre-university education, Morocco scored 48.47, ranking 129th globally, with government expenditure on primary and secondary education as low as 28.26, while Lebanon ranked 101st and Egypt 117th.

South Korea, ranked 8th in global knowledge infrastructures, scored 79, followed by Switzerland and Belarus with 73.7.

Morocco also scored 38 in information and communication technology, ranking 83rd globally. Singapore led with 72.3, followed by Ireland with 68.1, while Mauritania ranked 152nd and Niger 187th.

In environmental, social, and governance, the Kingdom came in 70th globally with a score of 52.3, ahead of Egypt at 102nd and Libya at 176th. Sweden and Norway led the ranking with 75.7 and 75.4, respectively.

Morocco ranked 100th in the economy category with a score of 37.8, ahead of Algeria at 154th and Sudan at 179th, while Singapore led with 76.3, followed by Switzerland with 75.

In (TVET) and higher education, the country was placed 117th globally with a score of 37.1, ahead of South Africa at 122nd, but behind Oman and Jordan, which ranked 107th and 97th, respectively.

Government expenditure on post-secondary non-tertiary and tertiary education, according to the report, was low at 12.62, and employment also scored low at 15.41.
