EU agriculture chief urges deeper cooperation with Morocco in food security

The EU should strengthen agricultural and economic cooperation with Morocco to address shared food-security, climate and migration pressures, European Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen said in an interview with Spanish daily El Debate.

Hansen described Morocco as a “central partner” for regional stability and a key actor in Europe’s strategy to secure sustainable food supplies, noting Rabat’s investments in irrigation efficiency, renewable energy and digital farming.

He said closer cooperation would support local economic prospects and help ease migration pressures through development rather than deterrence measures.

The commissioner said EU agricultural agreements with Mediterranean partners do not expand market access but improve legal clarity and transparency, adding that Brussels is tightening controls to prevent imports produced with substances banned in Europe,  a move that he said benefits compliant Moroccan exporters.

He also highlighted Europe’s ageing farming workforce and upcoming tools under the next Common Agricultural Policy, including expanded support for young farmers and new financing instruments with the European Investment Bank.
