Morocco was the second-largest destination for foreign direct investment in renewable energy in the Arab region between 2003 and 2024, attracting 55 projects worth 38.16 billion dollars, according to a sector report by the Arab Investment and Export Credit Guarantee Corporation (Dhaman).

The country accounted for about 11 percent of regional investment flows and created more than 12,200 direct jobs over the period.

Egypt led the region with nearly 161 billion dollars across 98 projects, while the United Arab Emirates ranked third with 38 billion dollars across 65 projects.

Mauritania and Jordan followed, bringing total regional inflows to 351.85 billion dollars involving 360 projects and 188 companies.

Dhaman’s data show that major investors included the UAE, France and India, alongside the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and China. Gulf firms dominated activity in project development, led by Saudi Arabia’s Acwa Power, which executed 20 projects between 2003 and 2024. Other active companies included AMEA Power and Masdar from the UAE, as well as European developers such as Scatec, Voltalia and Building Energy.

Renewable-electricity generation attracted the bulk of investment with about 248 billion dollars across 98 projects, while solar projects accounted for 46.5 billion dollars. Morocco’s position reflects sustained interest in its regulatory framework and long-term energy-transition plans, which target expanded solar and wind capacity.
