Moroccan digital experts say the uneven availability of 5G services since the network’s official launch reflects a mix of technical and regulatory constraints rather than device quality.
Cybersecurity specialist Tayeb El Hezzaz told Hespress that 5G coverage remains limited to select neighborhoods in major cities, leaving many users on 4G even with compatible phones.
He said full 5G functionality depends on several factors working together, active network coverage, device compatibility with Moroccan frequency bands (700 MHz and 3.5 GHz), updated software, and proper network settings.
El Hezzaz noted that many imported phones, particularly those bought through parallel markets, lack full support for these frequencies or require software updates from manufacturers before 5G can be enabled locally.
Tarik Haidar, a telecommunications engineer and professor in Marrakech, added that Morocco’s telecom operators have completed technical trials, but nationwide commercial authorization from the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency has yet to be issued.
