After more than a decade of inactivity, the historic maritime route linking Cádiz in southern Spain to Agadir in Morocco is set to resume operations.

The line, which stopped operating in 2014, has attracted renewed interest from both Spanish and Moroccan authorities. Now, a German shipping company has expressed strong interest in running the route, according to La Voz de Cádiz.

Negotiations are reportedly at an advanced stage, involving the Port Authority of the Bay of Cádiz (APBC), representatives from Morocco’s private sector, and several international shipping firms. Officials aim to finalize an agreement before the end of 2025, paving the way for the first commercial voyages in the first quarter of 2026.

The revived route is expected to ease congestion at the Port of Algeciras, one of Europe’s busiest shipping hubs, while opening a direct maritime corridor for passengers and goods between southern Spain and Morocco.

According to the Cádiz port authority, the new service will complement, rather than compete with, the recently launched route by Tailwind Shipping Lines, which already connects Cádiz with Casablanca.

Historically, the line between Cádiz and Casablanca was operated by Comanav for more than three decades. At its peak, it handled roughly 400,000 tons of cargo annually, including agricultural products and textiles. Its closure in 2014 left a gap in maritime trade flows between Morocco and southern Europe.

Spanish and Moroccan officials say linking Agadir, Morocco’s key southern port, will further strengthen trade. The project is expected to benefit from Cádiz’s new container terminal, set to be fully operational before 2026, and two dedicated railway lines that will connect the port to Seville and other major European hubs.

The initiative is part of a broader plan to position Cádiz as a strategic logistics hub in southern Europe. Its modern infrastructure and rail connectivity make it a natural gateway for Moroccan investors seeking new channels to export products to central Europe.
