A residential building in Casablanca’s Old Medina collapsed in the early hours of today, Wednesday, killing two elderly residents and trapping a third person beneath the debris.

The two fatalities were an elderly husband and wife who lived on the upper floor and were unable to escape the structure. Emergency crews from Civil Protection managed to successfully rescue a third individual, a 26-year-old man, who was found alive under the rubble.

A family unit of seven people, including a couple, four children, and the homeowner’s siblings, narrowly escaped the collapse after realizing the building was failing. The injured were rushed to Moulay Youssef Hospital for initial treatment.

The incident mobilized various high-ranking officials, including the Governor of Anfa, local security services, and the Auxiliary Forces. The disaster brings back urgent concerns over the safety of remaining buildings in the Old Medina as the rainy season approaches.
