Morocco’s ruling coalition shows cracks as Istiqlal MPs toughen tone toward government

Signs of tension are surfacing within Morocco’s governing coalition as lawmakers from the Istiqlal Party prepare to adopt a more confrontational stance toward the government in the final year of the current parliamentary term, sources told Hespress.

The move follows what initially appeared to be a lighthearted remark by Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi, who joked in parliament that he might soon be “the only one left in the majority.”

Behind the humor, however, lies a growing rift among coalition partners.

According to party insiders, several Istiqlal deputies have rejected internal directives urging restraint and diplomatic tone during weekly parliamentary questioning sessions.

They argue that the party must show “greater courage” in criticizing government performance, particularly that of ministers from coalition allies, the National Rally of Independents (RNI) and the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM),  ahead of the 2026 legislative elections.

Party members insist that maintaining excessive caution could weaken Istiqlal’s image as a leading force capable of heading what some have dubbed the “World Cup government”, referring to Morocco’s role as a 2030 World Cup co-host.

Political observers say the shift marks the beginning of a more competitive phase within the ruling bloc, with Istiqlal seeking to assert its independence while positioning itself for electoral advantage.
