Morocco maintained a resilient mergers and acquisitions (M&A) performance in the first half of 2025 despite a continent-wide investment downturn, recording 13 domestic deals worth $46.1 million, according to data from DealMakers Africa.
The report shows Morocco ranked second in North Africa, behind Egypt’s $201 million across 31 deals, while Tunisia lagged with just three transactions valued at $200,000.
The Moroccan deals spanned key sectors including financial services, insurance, fintech, retail, agrifood, technology, and healthcare, underscoring the country’s diversified economic base and relative investor confidence.
Across Africa, the M&A market contracted sharply, with total deal value outside South Africa dropping to $4.66 billion, down 16 percent year-on-year and 61 percent compared with 2022.
Deal volume fell by 21 percent, reflecting a broader slowdown triggered by high global interest rates, a strong U.S. dollar, and geopolitical uncertainty, which have pushed investors toward safer markets.
Analysts say Africa’s private equity ecosystem, heavily reliant on foreign capital, has suffered from declining fundraising activity and more selective capital allocation.
Local currency volatility, political uncertainty in major economies such as Nigeria, and energy instability have further weighed on investor sentiment. The tech and fintech sectors, once key growth engines after the pandemic, also saw valuation corrections that curbed deal flow.
Still, long-term fundamentals remain favorable. Rapid urbanization, population growth, and rising demand for infrastructure, healthcare, and green energy continue to position Africa as a long-term investment destination.
Within that landscape, Morocco stands out as a strategic gateway, offering competitive valuations, stable governance, and an improving business environment that contrasts with the broader regional slowdown.
