The Moroccan Sahara issue is no longer pending on the international community’s agenda; it has become a test of the seriousness of proposed solutions and their feasibility.

From the United Nations podium, Morocco has clearly stated that its autonomy plan within the framework of national sovereignty is the only way to end the decades-long fabricated conflict.

Head of government Aziz Akhannouch’s speech before the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly was not just a traditional political stance. Rather, it was the embodiment of a comprehensive and strategic vision for the Kingdom. This vision combined advanced diplomacy, sustainable economic development, and the preservation of national sovereignty within a clear framework for resolving the artificial conflict over the Sahara.

The speech offered the world two choices: cling to the illusions of the past or pursue a realistic, lasting solution that would guarantee stability and development for the region.

The growing international support for the autonomy plan highlights the credibility of this solution among the international community, with most countries considering it the only pragmatic basis for resolving the conflict. This support also reflects Morocco’s success in making the Sahara issue an international political and diplomatic priority, based on the Kingdom’s legal and political credibility and its long history of defending its territorial integrity.

In addition to the diplomatic dimension, socioeconomic transformation in the southern regions is a key driver of stability and comprehensive development. The major projects and new development model adopted by the Kingdom have impacted the development of infrastructure and public services. They have also laid the foundation for a sustainable economic and social environment. This makes the Moroccan Sahara a strategic platform for supporting the national economy and promoting regional integration.

These efforts have not only aimed to improve the living conditions of citizens, but have also contributed to strengthening community and political security, reflecting Morocco’s deep understanding of the close relationship between development and stability, and its conviction that balanced economic and social solutions are the cornerstone of any lasting political settlement.

In the same vein, preserving national sovereignty and the unity of Moroccan territory remains the cornerstone of any solution. The autonomy plan combines the recognition of Morocco’s historical and political rights with a pragmatic approach to finding an internationally acceptable settlement. This balance between national sovereignty and smart diplomacy, led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, highlights Morocco’s ability to offer flexible and viable solutions that respect its vital interests and put an end to an artificial dispute without compromising the Kingdom’s security and stability.

From a forward-looking perspective, the autonomy plan provides a solid basis for a peaceful and lasting settlement of the dispute and opens the way for strengthening peace and stability in the entire region. Morocco’s commitment to supporting the efforts of the United Nations and its Personal Envoy reflects its seriousness in embracing peaceful solutions and confirms that it is not merely a party to the conflict, but an active partner and initiator of the settlement.

The combination of realistic political solutions, development initiatives, and respect for national sovereignty provides an integrated model that consolidates Morocco’s position as a key player in promoting regional and international security, transforming the Moroccan Sahara from a source of conflict into a lever for strength and stability.

Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch presented a comprehensive vision in his speech, integrating diplomacy, economic development, and national sovereignty. He emphasized the autonomy plan as a strategic framework for achieving lasting peace, stability, and development in the region.
