Morocco has been ranked ninth in Africa for adult obesity in 2025, with a prevalence rate of 13.79 percent, according to a report cited by African Exponent on Sunday.
Major cities such as Casablanca, Rabat and Marrakech record the highest rates, driven by shifting diets, sedentary office jobs, and the growing consumption of fast food and processed products.
Rural communities remain more tied to traditional foods, the report notes a gradual increase in sugary drinks and packaged goods even outside cities, reshaping eating habits across generations.
The health consequences are already evident, with obesity contributing to rising cases of diabetes and hypertension nationwide. Women are particularly vulnerable, showing rates twice as high as men due to social and cultural factors as well as limited access to fitness spaces.
Authorities have begun campaigns promoting balanced diets and physical activity, alongside urban planning initiatives to include walking and sports areas in major cities.
