Three Moroccan regions, namely Casablanca–Settat, Rabat–Sale–Kenitra, and Tangier–Tétouan–Al Hoceima together produced 58.5% of the country’s GDP in 2023, according to the High Commission for Planning (HCP).

Casablanca–Settat remained the economic engine of the country, accounting for nearly a third of GDP at 32.2%. Rabat–Salé–Kenitra followed with 15.7%, and Tangier–Tétouan–Al Hoceima contributed 10.6%.

Five other regions generated 33.8% of GDP, led by Marrakech–Safi (8.5%) and Fes–Meknès (8.4%).

The southern and southeastern regions, including Draa–Tafilalet, Guelmim–Oued Noun, Laayoune–Sakia El Hamra, and Dakhla–Oued Edahab, together contributed just 7.6%.

The HCP report highlighted growing regional inequality, with the average gap between regional GDP and the national average rising from MAD 73.3 billion in 2022 to MAD 83.1 billion in 2023.

Despite this, five regions recorded growth above the national average of 3.7%. Dakhla–Oued Edahab led with 10.1% growth, followed by Fes–Meknès (8.9%), Marrakech–Safi (6.3%), Casablanca–Settat (5%), and Tangier–Tétouan–Al Hoceima (4.9%).

The growth in Dakhla–Oued Edahab was fueled by fisheries, construction, and public works, while Fes–Meknès benefited from agriculture and services, and Marrakech–Safi saw a recovery in tourism-related sectors.

Other regions grew below the national average, including Laayoune–Sakia El Hamra (2.9%), Souss–Massa (1.8%), Rabat–Salé–Kenitra (0.7%), Guelmim–Oued Noun (1.2%), and Draa–Tafilalet (1.5%). Beni Mellal–Khénifra contracted by 1.3% and the Oriental region fell 1%, mainly due to declines in agricultural output.

The report underscores the persistent economic disparities between Morocco’s northern and southern regions despite steady national growth.
